Notebook

Family is the most unforgettable, soul-stirring. Feelings of parents and children, brothers and sisters love. Husband and wife love touched the ... ... With this family, bread is sweet, fragrant, exposed places the wind is warm meal, and good; no more of this family, feasting, nectar rain is astringent, sour, silk clothing Xiupi, high-rise buildings is cold, broken.

Flowers and garden needs watering, planting, in order to evergreen, flowers; warm affection only moist, stretching to constant, daily, never dried up. This is a family need to watch, only a hold of this situation, there your heart will not come in winter.

Gross old man 75th birthday that day, he called the four sons called back. Ate a birthday dinner, hair old man from the house out of a thick pile of money to hold,  put, said: "You think of it, all these years I do hard ground steak, surprisingly she saved 16 million dollars. Old people do not need this money, and these days has pondered the money given to you ... you tell me, how to divide this money? "

Four sons, the old man's hair did not dream I was not save so much money, all of a sudden all the glowing terms. Restrain the boss happy heart strength, deliberately pretending to look very calm, said: "Dad, we have four days of the poor are rich, say, our family, even though in the provincial capital, all aspects of overhead, high school children immediately graduated college and was a wealthy child, you see, is not in accordance with the actual circumstances of each sub-money? "

Second child, said: "each have a through and refused to clean up is unknown, I think, or equally, fair and reasonable, nothing to say." Ranks the fourth, said: "Yes, I think, or a forty thousand, just neat!" four sons, only the youngest has been nothing, old man asked him what Mao thought, youngest, said: "Dad, you are older, have money, we usually get back with little, if out of the Han things, not many around how money into? I think this money is not good points. "

Boss coughed, said: "It stands to reason we should not take this money, but now each has a difficulty is not? Youngest you say it, too old to even the objects are not all day, Maili Qi a coolie than Everyone is busy, have some money Ye Hao marry a daughter into a home ah! "

Second child and ranks the fourth kept saying is that hair old man said: "This year my body bone getting worse, while now if you do not understand the hours, the day a wash, the money might make your brother hurt the gas. The how to divide, I would have thought of a way --- "Then he took out a piece of paper from his arms, the four brothers passed the note again, saw that says ---

Boss: 8430 yuan; second child: 13,640 yuan; youngest: 95,800 yuan; fourth eldest: 42,130 yuan.

Boss look, anxious white face, I do not know really move the feelings or getting better, at the time could not help but shed tears, choking back tears, he said: "Dad, are you flesh and blood, no one knows my house is now the most need money, why do you give me at least? you do not eccentric? "second child is also not convinced, said:" Dad, poor kid our house and I followed your brother to eat the most bitter, how we have divided the least ah? father you always confused ah? "

At this time, Mao started shaking the old man took out a notebook to and from his arms, tears, said: "Dad old, I did not confused, since eight years ago after the death of your Mother, you know all these years is how my day off? I hope you go home every day, can you back and forth a few times at home all these years? a diary This is my book, you see it. "Mao said the old man to open diary, four brothers in front of a pages turned over, he turn to this page February 10, pointing to the boss, said: "Last year this day is 7:00 pm, you had a phone call, said two things, a share of 30 seconds."

Mao said the old man has turned a few pages, pointing to her second child, said: "June 14, the day the phone is calling you, say three sentences, with 47 seconds." Gross old man went on to say: "fourth of September 25 with a wife back, as I wash the clothes and bedding."

Only the youngest in the 15th of each month has a record of this day, sometimes back to a chicken, sometimes sweeping the yard, but almost every record has a word: fight. Youngest old man to see the original hair a lot older or a bachelor, advised him to marry a country girl Well, he did not listen. He do not have a stable job, limited income, but also for the gross old man often buy this buy that, and he married money, so every time they come back they always come back to this father and son bicker.

Gross old man said: "This year a diary, I have jotted down 8. Each of you home or call back time, I built up the bottom in to you, clearly now the 16 million dollars, according to the time it takes you home prorated, so the fairest! "

Watching these sad diaries to his father, four brothers who could not say a word, the room still terrible. Long, the third only spoke up: "Dad, I do not good, because the mix of old did not feel in their own personal kind, every home did not come back with a good mood, always tiresome to you, and, I'm back was also too little! This way to your very good, very reasonable, but I do not forget to see the former, or from the start to now, the future this method with your children on the sub heritage, who do not come back to accompany you, you are on a child not to give him, okay? "

The other three brothers flushed together to say "good."

What is IMMOBILISER system?

Description

This article describes the system approaches for the first and secondgeneration of immobilizer systems. It compares the various security levelsand gives an overview about the latest generation technology, called crypto-transponders.
What is IMMOBILISER system?

There is two kind of transponders used in the immobiliser system. The first one is RFID transponder.

Since the introduction of immobilizer systems the need for improved security constantly increases. Many Anti Theft Systems make use of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology because of its unique features. RFID transponders can provide a high level of security at low cost.

Key-based immobilizer systems consist of four main components. The core of the system is the transponder, a batteryless device which is available in various form factors and with different functionalities. For operation, the transponder has to be supplied with energy from an external source. The transceiver generates a high frequency magnetic field which is radiated by an antenna coil. The energy activates the transponder and it sends a data stream in form of a modulated RF signal. This signal is demodulated by the transceiver and then passed to the controller for data processing.

Second transponder type:Crypto Transponders

Crypto Transponders are the second generation of transponders for use in immobilizers. The new generation of crypto transponders developed by Texas Instruments are based upon the TIRIS TM half duplex RFID technology and are compatible to all standard RF interfaces of the TIRIS TM product range.

What is Standard Security Architectures using RFID?
1.Fixed Code Systems
2.Rolling Code Systems
3.Password Protected Transponders
4.Combined Rolling Code / Password Systems

Can E15 Gasoline Really Damage Your Engine?

Most people realize that all of us burn gasohol—a mixture of gasoline and alcohol—in our cars. Just about every gallon of gas pumped today contains as much as 10 percent domestically produced ethanol. Gummed-up fuel systems, damaged tanks and phase separation caused by stray moisture infiltrating fuel systems have plagued many consumers since this mixture debuted, and the problems will only get worse if government policy to increase the proportion of ethanol to gasoline is implemented. Don't get me wrong: Gasoline diluted with ethanol is a perfectly acceptable motor fuel when it's stored properly, dispensed promptly and burned in vehicles and power equipment designed to handle it. Which, unfortunately, is not always the case.

Moonshine It's Not

That 90:10 mixture of gasoline and alcohol is referred to as E10, while a different blend of 15 percent gas and 85 percent alcohol is sold regionally as E85. On this scale, straight petroleum-based gasoline is referred to as E0. Most gasoline dispensed from pumps in this country is as much as 10 percent ethanol, distilled from corn grown in the Midwest. This alcoholic cocktail was originally mandated by the EPA as a replacement for MTBE (methyl tertiary butyl ether), an oxygen-bearing petroleum-sourced chemical that was added to pump gasoline starting in 1979 to reduce carbon monoxide emissions in some regions that had problems meeting government air-quality standards. The oxygen in the MTBE (and ethanol) molecules can substantially reduce CO emissions in vehicles without modern closed-loop fuel-injection systems, which were introduced starting in the '80s.

Soon after, MTBE started turning up in groundwater, affecting the taste and smell of drinking water, so ethanol was substituted. (Shockingly, MTBE isn't considered toxic or even carcinogenic in the concentrations found in groundwater, but still.)

However: If the beneficial effects of oxygenated fuel have largely been bypassed by modern feedback-loop injection systems, which control the air-to-fuel ratio much more closely, why is ethanol still in your fuel? Because the second President Bush made a decision to offset some of our dependence on foreign oil with domestically produced alcohol, and the Corn Belt senators agreed. Ethanol plants have mushroomed, ramping up U.S. production from 1.77 billion gallons in 2001 to 10.75 billion gallons in 2009. Politics aside, odds are near 100 percent that there's as much as 10 percent alcohol in the gasoline you're pumping into your car and that 5-gallon can you use to fuel all your other gas engines.

Keeping Water Where It Belongs

The ethanol in your gas tank is uniformly dissolved in the gasoline. Alcohol tends to absorb and hold water, and in concentrations in the tank up to about 0.6 percent, any water remains in solution, presenting no problems. (Yes, there are other problems with alcohol in the fuel system, but we'll get to them later.) How does water get into the fuel tank? It's possible that water dripped into the tank at the gas station or refueling depot, or a stray raindrop or snowflake made its way into your tank or jerrycan, but most water infiltration is from condensation. As the temperature in a tank changes, air has to be vented in and out or the tank will bulge or split. Incoming air carries moisture. When the H2O in the gas gets above a critical percentage—its saturation point—all of the water and alcohol drops out and settles into the bottom of the tank. This is what chemists call phase separation; the various components of the fuel are no longer a homogeneous mixture.

link: BMW GT1|BENZ STAR|Ford outcode|BMW ICOM ISIS| PS2 truck professional diagnostic tool| Suzuki diagnostic tool| VOLVO VCADS & VOLVO Interface |Vag k+can commander 8.1|BMW AK90| Multi-Di@g Access | KESS OBD Tuning Kit|JMA TPX2|BMW GT1|

But phase separation does not occur only from increased water concentration, which is actually unlikely in a modern, emissions-sealed automotive fuel system. The temperature of the fuel is a factor as well. Here's the scenario: You fill up the car or gas can with fuel that, for a variety of reasons, is near its water-saturation point and at 60 degrees. Overnight, the temperature drops 20 degrees, and all the water and alcohol settle out even though no extra water has crept in. Guess what? The engine won't run when the fuel pickup is sucking up the alcohol–water mix.

Worse yet, the gasoline remaining above the water has probably lost three octane points, because today's gasoline relies heavily on the high-octane equivalence (130) of alcohol to achieve its octane rating. It's also missing a bunch of additives that stayed in the alcohol—so the entire tankful should be drained and disposed of as hazardous waste.

And no, adding more alcohol, in the form of fuel-line de-icer, lacquer thinner or cheap vodka will never restore that gasoline to usefulness. You don't want to add yet more alcohol, lest the increased concentration turns your carburetor float to Jell-O. The only acceptable way to attempt to save the gas in the tank is to add a large amount of gasoline that's got a very low moisture content. Problem is, there's no good way to tell if pump gas has a little or a lot of water on board. You stand the chance of having twice as much phase-separated, unusable gasoline as before. Better to dispose of the whole tankful.

2011 Ford Edge Test Drive
Nashville, Tenn.—Ford pioneered new territory in 2006 when it introduced the Edge, a racy two-row crossover. The Edge forsook the Explorer’s pretense of bushwhacking off-road capability without surrendering to the jacked-up-station-wagon persona of the Freestyle. Customers responded by sending the Edge to the top of the crossover segment, where it has tallied some 400,000 sales.

Trouble was, the Edge looked good on paper and in the metal, but its appeal faded on the road, where poor execution of details undermined the car’s potential. Ford’s goal for 2011: Make the Edge drive like it looks.

The Specs

Dearborn’s engineers started by junking the outgoing powertrain. The Edge now relies primarily on a more powerful and efficient 285-hp 3.5-liter V-6. Backed by a six-speed automatic transmission, the V6 achieves EPA ratings of 19 mpg city / 27 mpg highway in front-wheel-drive form.

Hot-rodders, or at least five-seat crossover shoppers who imagine themselves in a flat black model with a flame paint job, can opt for the Edge Sport. That was mostly an appearance package on the old model, but the new Sport gains a 305-hp 3.7-liter V-6 borrowed from the Mustang.

The Sport rolls on standard 22-inch aluminum wheels and has tauter shock tuning for more responsive handling. Despite the big wheels and stiffer shocks, the ride doesn’t prove as jarring as the combination would suggest, and gas mileage slips only slightly to 18 mpg city and 25 mpg highway.

The most interesting news, however, is the Edge’s use of Ford’s new 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder EcoBoost engine, which is slated to become available early next year. According to Ford, this power plant will deliver 10 percent better gas mileage than a comparable V-6 with similar horsepower and torque, which means gas mileage of 30 mpg. We’ll find out more details when this engine debuts in the 2011 Explorer this fall.

Ford Edge Photos

Like the Best Buy of automotive brands, Ford is pressing its electronic gadgetry as a competitive advantage. Not coincidentally, Ford conducts consumer events in conjunction with Best Buy, helping show customers how to integrate their phones into Ford’s Sync hands-free system.

Sync joins with a variety of other features such as HD Radio with iTunes Tagging, MyKey driver restriction technology, and blind-spot warning. Most visible is the new MyFord Touch interface, employing dual 4.2-inch LCD displays that flank the speedometer in the instrument cluster in the manner seen previously in the Fusion Hybrid, plus a big 8-inch central screen that provides an optional $795 built-in navigation system.

The small displays provide information from the MyFord Touch Navigation system, which uses the customer’s phone to stream data to the car. This service is free for three years and costs $60 per year thereafter.

A wireless router is also available, which allows the built-in hotspot to feed electronic devices in the vehicle, so passengers can check email or watch YouTube on the road.

The base price of the front-wheel-drive Edge Limited we tested is $34,220, and the options list‚ including items like a panoramic sunroof, HID xenon headlights, adaptive cruise control, blind spot warning, and voice-activated navigation with Sirius Travel Link‚ pushes it to $40,480.

The Drive

If the Edge looked good on paper before, it looks even better now, with loads of gee-whiz hardware and technology. Remarkably, it all works. Previous versions of Sync had a first-level menu vocabulary of 100 words, which meant that if you didn’t know the secret password to launch Sync down the decision tree toward the desired function, you were as locked out.

This frustration was a leading complaint consumers voiced when surveyed about their satisfaction with Ford vehicles, according to Art Spinella, president of CNW Research. Absent this frustration, Ford would have easily topped recent J.D. Power satisfaction surveys, he said.

Addressing that, Ford has given Sync a brain transplant, upgrading it from a Frankensteinian 100 words to a Einsteinian 10,000. “It isn’t natural language yet, but it is pretty close and it will probably feel like natural language,” says John Schneider, chief engineer of multimedia and entertainment.

There are fixes to the Edge’s fundamental hardware too. The old Edge had a vague, sloppy feeling to its steering, a problem Ford has corrected by upgrading to a steering rack with reduced internal friction. Additionally, according to vehicle engineering manager Rich Kreder, testing showed the Edge’s steering was uncommonly sensitive to the valving of the rear shocks, so Ford tuned the rear shocks’ low-speed damping to improve the steering response.

Edge owners complained bitterly about the outgoing model’s mushy, confidence-sapping brake pedal. In response, the company installed stiffer brake calipers, brake pads that grab more aggressively and changed the motion ratio of the pedal assembly to provide a firm, responsive brake pedal. “It was embarrassing that the old brakes were so bad,” Kreder says.

To differentiate the 2011 model from the first generation Edge, the Blue Oval boys refreshed the exterior styling with a few tweaks to the grille, headlights and fascias. Inside, however, the Edge was given a complete overhaul. Ford ditched the old hard surfaces, replacing them with soft-touch materials using fewer parts with fewer seams, which is where problematic squeaks and rattles can arise. They also packed the Edge with more sound-deadening material, thicker glass, bigger subframe bushings and nearly every other available technique to filter unwanted noise from the cabin.

The hushed interior ambiance lets the driver’s ears relax so that his eyes can discover details like stitched leather trim in the up-market SEL and Limited models, which will account for 80 percent of Edge sales.

The Bottom Line

The Edge finally delivers on the dynamic driving experience promised by its design, with a trio of powertrains that let customers choose an engine that best suits their needs. A sumptuous cockpit and increasingly functional electronic gadgetry‚ details that have contributed to the Taurus increasing its residual value, are bonus features that will boost customer satisfaction. These upgrades effectively distance the Edge from competitors like the dismally cheap Toyota Venza and should fend off the strong challenges of the Hyundai Santa Fe and Kia Sportage.

2011 Scion tC Test Drive

Depending on how you look at it, the new 2011 Scion tC is either the second-generation tC or the ninth generation of the Toyota Celica. Either way, it represents 40 years of Toyota's single-minded pursuit of the idea that straightforward, ordinary mechanical parts packaged in sporty coupe sheet metal is a compelling recipe for young buyers.

If that sounds like the same formula that's worked for more than 48 model years of the Ford Mustang, bingo.

The tC gets a new engine and a six-speed transmission, but Toyota isn't about to screw up a good thing—the formula is unchanged, and the basic structure carries over. After all, the Scion sub-brand has been a success for Toyota, and the tC is the best-selling Scion of them all.

The Specs

How the new 2011 tC looks is no surprise, since the car was shown at the 2010 New York Auto Show last April. From the back, this hatchback appears more aggressive than the outgoing model, with thicker C-pillars, more muscular fenders and a more chiseled rear bumper cover. From the front, however, the car looks more generic than before, with its slightly sloped front fascia nowhere near as distinct as the chunky bulldog nose of the original. The tC might gain a slight aerodynamic advantage with that slope, but it comes at the price of distinctiveness.

The new tC rides on the same 106.3-inch wheelbase, stretches out the same 174.0 inches long overall and stands the same 55.7 inches tall. The one dimension that grows is width—from 69.1 to 70.7 inches. The front track width increases from 59.3 to 60.6 inches, and the rear goes from 59.3 to 61.4 inches.

That's not just due to bigger side mirrors. Some of the extra width can be attributed to the adoption of new standard 18-inch wheels, with slightly tweaked offsets, over the previous 17s, and the increase in standard tire size from 215/45R17 to 225/45R18. The larger-diameter and wider tires make the new tC seem somehow more voluptuous.

With its bodily dimensions largely intact, it's no surprise that the unibody chassis is also mostly unchanged. The front end is still held up with a pair of MacPherson struts, while the tail floats atop an independent double-wishbone system. The steering is still rack-and-pinion, but the power assist has gone from hydraulic to electric, and the steering ratio has been quickened from 17.7:1 to 14.8:1, with a commensurate tightening of the turning radius from a vast 36.1 feet to just 18.7 feet. From a practical standpoint, that can be the difference between turning around in a parking lot between trucks and being stuck backing out with the tC's limited rear visibility.

The brakes are bigger too, with front ventilated discs increasing from 10.83 to 11.65 inches, and the solid rear discs growing from 10.59 to 10.98 inches. Brake assist is now standard along with the anti-lock system.

The tC's new 2.5-liter engine is virtually identical to the four-cylinder engine offered in the 2010 Toyota Camry SE. It's all aluminum with dual overhead cams, four valves per cylinder, sequential fuel injection, dual variable valve timing and a 10.4:1 compression ratio. The Camry SE's engine is rated at 179 horsepower at 6000 rpm, with 171 lb-ft of peak torque at 4100 rpm. Thanks to slightly different engine-control computer programming and different intake and exhaust systems, the tC develops one extra horsepower at 6000 rpm and two more lb-ft of torque at 4100 rpm.

That may be a negligible advantage over the Camry SE, but it's a whopping improvement of 19 horsepower and 11 lb-ft of torque over the 2.4-liter four in last year's tC. Moreover, a new six-speed manual and automatic transmissions take advantage of the new engine's muscle. The automatic carries the same gear ratios and final drive as the four-cylinder Camry's transaxle, while the manual transmission has slightly tighter ratios than the Camry's, with both fifth and sixth overdrives.

The Drive

link: BMW GT1|Nissan Consult III|Nissan Consult Diagnostic Interface|AUTOBOSS V30|Autoboss PC-MAX| AUTOBOSS STAR 2600+| gm tech 2| C168 Scanner|mb star c3|mb star c4|

Tuned for midrange power and solid torque production, the tC's powerplant isn't a screamer like the rev-happy, 8000-rpm redline, 197-horsepower 2.0-liter engine in Honda's Civic Si. The tC's engine lopes into the meat of its powerband and then settles in for a stretch before crying uncle near its 6250-rpm redline. This is an engine built to work comfortably with an automatic transmission. Remember, Honda doesn't even offer an automatic in the Civic Si, since its engine needs reach 6100 rpm to make a relatively feeble 139 lb-ft of torque. And while Honda's Civic Si requires premium fuel, the new tC runs just fine on regular.

As before, the tC comes with a panoramic sunroof as standard equipment. With the roll-up shade retracted, the roof gives the tC's interior a nice roomy feel. Tall drivers can still knock their heads on the ceiling, the front seats' range of adjustment is a bit too limited, and there's not a lot of rear legroom, but the tC's cockpit is a comfortable place to be once you're acclimated to it.

The new dashboard angles all instrumentation and controls toward the driver, and everything makes intuitive sense. There are redundant audio controls on the steering wheel, and the tachometer and speedometer are set into deep tunnels, which makes scanning the major gauges more difficult than it should be. But it's the current fashion, and Scion is nothing if not fashionable.

The front seats are well-shaped and covered in a rugged fabric sure to survive multiple attempts to rip it apart with mislaid toys and tools. The fabric's pattern looks like a mid-Eighties label for an off-brand malt liquor, but it's passable. BMW GT1 The rear seat would be nice enough, if there were legroom to go with it.

As for safety, there are airbags for the driver and front passenger, along with supplemental airbags for their knees. Side airbags are mounted into the front seats and along the side curtain area.

For buyers in the tC's target demographic, an eardrum-crushing sound system is a must. The tC comes standard with 300-watt system with a 160-watt Pioneer-branded head unit and a 140-watt two-channel amplifier feeding eight speakers. RCA output jacks encourage the addition of even more speakers. Content can be plumbed in through a CD player, a satellite radio, auxiliary and USB input ports or the normal assortment of over-the-air radio bands. The optional stereo is an Alpine that features a touch screen and can be combined with navigation and rear-view camera systems.

The tC's exterior may promise excitement, but the chassis delivers more comfort than thrills. This isn't an on-edge performer eager to carve corners or win drag races. It drives like a slightly more nimble Camry, stays solidly planted when hustled, will plow its nose a bit before the traction control system kicks in (the system can't be turned completely off) and rides smoothly and confidently.

Toyota claims a 0-to-60 mph time of 7.6 seconds for the manual transmission version of the new tC and 8.3 seconds for the automatic. That seems reasonable and an improvement over the old tC's performance—which the manufacturer claimed hit 60 mph in 8.2 seconds with a five-speed manual and 9.1 seconds with the optional four-speed automatic.

As for efficiency, the EPA says that the 2011 tC—equipped with either the manual or automatic transmission—will return 23 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway. That's 3 or 4 mpg (depending on equipment) more than the previous tC's ratings.

There will be a full range of after-market parts available from Toyota's TRD parts operation. However, like the first tC, the new car will be built but not sold in Japan, which will limit the development of Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) performance and appearance packages.

The Bottom Line

Toyota killed the Celica in 2005, after a total of 2,218,997 had been sold in the U.S., just as the first Scion tC went on sale. Like the first Celica, the tC is sort of a five-sixth-scale Mustang, and like the Mustang, the tC is still accessible to young buyers. According to Toyota, the median age of tC buyers is 26, and it's easy to see why. At a base price of $18,995 (including destination charges) the new tC is affordable and, considering its modest performance pedigree, should be relatively easy to insure.

Remember, the cheapest new 2011 Mustang V6 costs almost $4,000 more, and going for the Mustang GT V8 means shelling out well over $30,000. Some Mustang GTs cost more than $40,000 after options. And just try to tell your insurance agent that you want a policy on a 412-horsepower Mustang GT before your 25th birthday.

The Toyota Celica was a good idea back in 1971, even if it wasn't a particularly exciting car. The 2011 Scion tC is a good idea today. Even if it's not a thrill ride, it's a practical car wrapped in the sheet metal of an indulgent sports machine.

Scion has always maintained that tC stands for Touring Coupe. But we all know it really means Toyota Celica.

Will LED Light Bulbs Best Your CFLs and Incandescents?
Solid-state lighting has long been touted as the next generation of efficient bulbs, but technical challenges have so far limited product offerings to 40-watt equivalents—and consumers haven’t exactly rushed shelves to purchase bulbs to read by. Developing light-emitting diodes (LEDs) that generate full-spectrum color—white light—is particularly difficult. Another hurdle has been finding a way to efficiently manage LED temperature: If the bulb gets too hot, it fails. Now, the first LED bulbs to rival the 60-watt,MB STAR| screw-in incandescent are finally poised to hit the market. If they win over consumers, the efficiency gains could yield impressive reductions not only in individual electricity bills but also in global carbon emissions. The Department of Energy estimates that replacing regular light bulbs with LEDs could potentially save 190 terawatt-hours annually (pdf)—the equivalent of lighting over 95 million homes.

The 12-watt EnduraLED, recently announced by Philips Lighting, has a rated life of 25,000 hours (nearly 3 years). The 9-watt Definity LED made by Lighting Science Group may last twice as long. But longevity in a super-efficient package doesn’t come cheap. Each Definity LED will cost about 30 dollars and the EnduraLED may top 50 dollars—as much as the lighting fixture it’s destined for. The price tag will almost certainly cause consumers to stop short and weigh the real benefits. But even with the current high price, LEDs are one of the most promising light sources available for consumers, beating out everything on the current market for reliability, efficiency and longevity.

Where CFLs Fall Short …

Studies from the Program for the Evaluation and Analysis of Residential Lighting (PEARL) show that compact fluorescent bulbs often don’t live up to manufacturer’s claims. Glenn Reed of Energy Futures Group in Burlington, Vt., and his colleague Chris Granda at Grasteu Associates recently analyzed five years’ worth of PEARL testing data on 1500 Energy Star–qualified CFLs. They found that some CFLs began to lose brightness quickly. For example, almost half of reflector CFLs—the kind used in recessed lighting—were more than a quarter dimmer before they had reached half of their rated lifetime. Although CFLs typically perform worse in recessed lighting, Reed found that these CFLs weren’t even living up to their Energy Star ratings. One possible explanation is that the recessed cans that house reflectors trap heat that wears out the bulb.

The PEARL studies also revealed that the average lifespan of CFLs often fell short, echoing a common complaint among CFL users. Among eight frequently tested brands, including Philips Lighting and General Electric, early failure rates ranged from 2 to 13 percent. The National Lighting Product Information Program has found similar differences in quality among Energy Star–labeled brands. Reed notes that PEARL only tested 10 bulbs per brand and that the same brand wasn’t necessarily tested all five years. These data limitations make it difficult to rank best and worst brands, but, says Reed, “it’s definitely a yellow flag.”

… LEDs Step In

Solid-state lighting can potentially overcome many problems with CFLs, including those highlighted by the PEARL studies. LEDs perform well in all lighting applications, including recessed lighting, and unlike all but specialized compact fluorescent bulbs LEDs are dimmable. Because of recent advances in optics, LEDs have a quality of light superior to all other types of lighting—and they deliver it more efficiently. For example, Lighting Science Group’s Definity LED delivers 112 lumens per watt compared to a CFL’s 50 to 70 lumens per watt.

Improvements in managing the LED chip’s temperature have contributed to their marathon life span: LEDs can last up to 50,000 hours, more than eight times as long as CFLs. The bulbs are also likely to deliver on their lifetime claims because they won’t face the same quality-assurance issues that have plagued CFLs. Energy Star only recently began performing “random, off-the-shelf testing” of Energy Star–qualified CFLs. In contrast, random testing has been a part of Energy Star’s eligibility criteria for solid-state lighting since the beginning. Even if CFL quality becomes more consistent now, they still can’t compete with LED efficiency or, because of their mercury content, be recycled as easily.

Zach Gibler, the CEO of Lighting Science Group, says LED prices will begin to drop over the next 12 to 36 months. A lower retail price for the 60-watt replacement combined with rebates, which companies already offer on many CFL and LED purchases, will provide strong incentives for consumers to replace CFLs with LEDs. “Right now for day-to-day use, CFLs are still an inexpensive energy-efficient alternative to incandescents,” Reed says, “but they are really just a transitional technology.”

2011 Kia Optima Preview at the 2010 New York Auto Show
The all-new 2011 Kia Optima unveiled here at the New York Auto Show sits longer, wider and lower than its predecessor, with freshly restyled sheet metal asserting that the brand's aesthetic renaissance is well underway.

The Optima's choice of three direct-injected four-cylinder powerplants also suggests Kia is hitting its technological stride. The engine choices range from a naturally aspirated 2.4-liter mill that produces 200 hp to a turbocharged 2.0-liter that yields 274 hp and a 2.4-liter hybrid which will be available in 2011 and claims class-leading power and fuel economy. All engines will be mated to a six-speed automatic gearbox equipped with steering-wheel-mounted paddle-shifters. A six-speed manual is optional on the base LX model.

The Optima lineup features three trim levels—LX, EX and SX. The LX is outfitted with 16-inch wheels, while the EX steps up with Microsoft's rear-view camera-equipped UVO infotainment system, push-button start ignition, dual-zone air conditioning with rear vents and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. The EX also receives fog lights, color-coded door handles and 17-inch wheels, while the top-of-the-line SX model offers leather seating, auto-leveling HID headlights, LED rear lights, sculpted side sills, a rear-lip spoiler and red brake calipers set inside 18-inch wheels, among other items.

Options for EX and SX models include a panoramic sunroof, leather seats, heated and cooled front and rear seats and a heated steering wheel. Also available is an eight-speaker, 500-watt Infinity 5.1 surround-sound system with HD radio, and a voice-activated navigation system with a 7-inch screen.

Standard features across the board include an AM/FM/CD/MP3 sounds system with Sirius satellite radio that accepts auxiliary and USB audio inputs. The Bluetooth-connected system can be operated using hands-free voice commands or steering-wheel-mounted controls. Automatic-transmission-equipped Optimas offer cruise control with an EcoMinder indicator that helps encourage fuel-efficient driving.

The Optima is yet another car in the Kia lineup to be updated with contemporary styling and competitive drivetrains; it arrives early this fall.

Top 5 Technologies Coming to Your Car (Soon)

Regensburg, Germany–Love it or love to hate it, technology is at the heart of the modern car, and it’s constantly evolving. Enthusiasts have a tendency to cringe whenever the latest computer-assisted driving aid is released, thinking that before we know it we’ll be living in some kind of twisted science-fiction movie. But the reality is that this concern is debatable at best, and some of the stuff you’ll be able to opt for on your next car is just so cool that you probably won’t be able to resist anyway. We checked in with the Continental Corporation in Germany, one of the world’s biggest suppliers of safety, interior and powertrain innovation, to see what’s in the pipes for our near future.

1. Emergency Steer Assist

If your car is equipped with a form of emergency brake assist, it already knows when it’s too late for late braking. It’s simple, really—your car knows how much traction it has, as well as how many feet it’s going to take to brake in time to avoid an accident. But the fact that you’ve ignored the last chance to brake doesn’t necessarily mean you’ve lost the chance to swerve. And that’s where Emergency Steer Assist comes in.

Before you delve into freakish paranoia, you should know that the system doesn’t take over and steer for you. Designed to compliment emergency braking systems, ESA works with your electric steering rack to vary the torque by direction, thus very convincingly “suggesting” the proper steering wheel motion. Suppose you need to swerve left—the torque in the clockwise motion is greatly increased (resistance), but it’s ridiculously easy to turn the wheel counterclockwise. Similarly, during the maneuver recovery phase (you may know this as the tank slapper), the inverse is true, the steering working in tandem with ESC (electronic stability control, mandatory on all cars in 2011) to control the aftereffects of the swerve.

2. Active Force Feedback Pedal

The more information being relayed to the driver, the more confusing things can be. Continental’s philosophy is the right one: instead of bombarding the driver with signals on an already crowded cluster or creating ever more beeping noises, they’ve turned to haptic feedback systems. You know, the ones that respond to your inputs physically to give information directly to your muscles.

The force-feedback pedal is pretty self-explanatory: The foot pressure can be varied instantly, from super-stiff to feather-light and, in addition, the pedal can pulse back on your foot. Think of the potential uses: In today’s increasingly eco-friendly cars, the pedal pressure could become stiff when you’re driving like a hooligan. It could pulse twice quickly for an upshift or downshift, and it could even assess traffic conditions ahead to discourage unnecessary acceleration. In the near future, your car will pick up an emergency stop warning from the car ahead—miles ahead—and could easily alert you with the pedal. <

3. AutoLinQ

Ford isn’t the only company attempting to bring apps to your dashboard. Continental showed its take, dubbed AutoLinQ, in Germany this week. They’ve got partners such as Navteq, Navigon, Shazam, Pandora and more lined up to bring the perks of your smartphone to your car.

Maybe the best part of Continental’s system is that it’s Android-based, which means that developers will be free to create whatever applications they want. Naturally they’ll need approval by Continental brass before becoming rolling distractions, though. And on that topic, the system is able to read things such as e-mail or rss feeds aloud, in an attempt to reduce distraction. The company is working on text-dictation software, too, so the entire system will be zero- or one-click—your eyes won’t leave the road.

Continental’s initial connectivity partnership is with Deutsche Telekom, but count on a U.S. deal before the system is released. The cell provider will offer a package price, not unlike what you get with an iPad now, until wireless infrastructure becomes pervasive enough to be a viable option (that is, both roadway-mounted and ad-hoc car-to-car communication).

4. Intelligent Tire System/Fill Assist

A new type of tire sensor, mounted on the inner tire tread (as opposed to the wheel), measures tire pressure, temperature, g-force and load. It weighs a few ounces—less than current TPMS (tire-pressure monitoring sensors). When a heavy load is detected, for example, the system can notify the driver that more air pressure is needed to optimize gas mileage, handling and safety. The sensors also communicate with ABS and ESC, so that these systems can optimize for a given tire pressure or vehicle load.

In addition, the sensors are programmed for the tire in which they reside, so they can tell you things like when you’re going too fast for snow tires, when the tires are getting bald, or when to switch to summer tires. Like the other four innovations, this one will most likely find its best use in the long future, when cars are able to send data about road conditions to one another. If, for example, you slip on black ice, your car notifies other cars on the road of the hazard.

The new sensors also allow for a new level of precision in pressure management. We’re looking at our tire pressure on an iPod, pressure which is changing by the pound as the test engineer deflates the tire. When he’s inflated it back to the correct level, a display in the car (and in our hands) will say so—and the car will even issue a little honk, telling you that you’re done filling.

5. Simplify Your Drive

Carmakers have realized that the machines they build must serve more than one purpose—you’re not always in the mood to fly around corners, or to be cushioned in the lap of luxury. That’s why many modern cars have simple profiles, which are designed to transform the car with the click of one button. But what’s the next step after Sport, Normal and Comfort?

Continental thinks it knows, offering up a fully LCD interface to better broadcast differing personas. Sample modes are Eco, Comfort and Sport, but carmakers will be able to customize these profiles. Also, users will likely be able to create their own when the system goes on sale. Like current cars, just about every system is affected with each button push, including throttle mapping, suspension damping, steering feedback, and more.

The difference here is that the actual look of the instrument cluster changes as well—for example, in Eco mode, there’s a four-leaf clover that can be “filled” green by driving economically. When all four leaves are green, the driver can head to the dealership for a reward. This, the company hopes, will not only encourage green driving, but will also drive online customers to physical dealerships. Also, the navigation will search for the most economical route, rather than the fastest or the shortest.

In Sport mode, red gauges and an accelerometer replace the green layout, and in Comfort, only the speedometer and relevant functions are shown. The system also works with Conti’s new Accelerator Force Feedback Pedal. Perhaps most interestingly (and scary), Continental sees the system as a way for manufacturers to hit CAFE targets: drive enough in Eco mode, and you’ll earn a romp in Sport mode.

2010 Audi A1 Test Drive
BERLIN—Audi's presentation for its new A1 claims that it is the only car in the premium supermini sector of the market. Surely this is some mistake? Once the marketing mullahs were put back into the rubber room, more steady heads admitted that this new baby Audi faces tough competition from, amongst others, BMW's Mini Cooper and Citroën's new DS3, although only the former is available in the U.S.

Perhaps it's a measure of how nervous Audi is about how buyers will see the Belgian-built A1 when it hits European markets this November—sales projections are modest, and the car will not be offered for sale in the U.S. until the next generation, meaning not for at least five years.

"We have no plans for U.S. sales at present," said Holger Baumann, project leader on the A1. "In principle it could be sold, but it would need some work on compliance with U.S. regulations."

The Specs

Make no mistake, under the skin this is a Volkswagen Polo, sharing the same MacPherson-strut front and torsion-beam rear suspension, brake options and range of engines and transmissions—remember that the Mini has a unique chassis floorpan with an independent rear suspension.

The A1 and the Polo share the same 8-foot, 1.2-inch wheelbase, but at 12 feet, 11.6 inches in length, the A1 is about an inch shorter than the Polo. There are a few material changes to the suspension, with longer trailing arms to better maintain handling integrity, and a high-strength steel front sub-frame. Torsion beams are simple as well as cost- and space-effective, but they suffer from ride/noise issues when the suspension is hardened up to improve the handling. The Audi has redesigned rear-suspension guide bushes to allow unidirectional deflection in an attempt to help overcome this drawback.

Rack-and-pinion steering is assisted by a hydraulic–electric system, and all models have standard electronic stability along with an electronically activated limited-slip differential to reduce the runaway wheel spin so often endemic with small, powerful, front-drive hatchbacks like this.

The launch models are all three doors, with a five-door model following in 18 months. Three four-cylinder engines will be available, including two turbo gas units: a single-cam 1.2-liter, which delivers 85 hp at 4800 rpm and 118 lb-ft of torque at 1500 rpm, and a twin-cam 1.4-liter delivering 120 hp at 5000 rpm and 148 lb-ft of torque at 1500 rpm. There's also a 1.6-liter turbodiesel with 104 hp at 4400 rpm and 184 lb-ft of torque at 1500 rpm, and a lower-powered version based on the same block will be launched later this year. Transmission options are a five-speed with the 1.2-liter and diesel, and a choice of six-speed manual, or seven-speed, twin-clutch transmission (a $2103/£1420 option) with the 1.4-liter model. Three trim levels are offered; SE, Sport and S-line and prices range from $19,470 (£13,145) for the 1.2-liter in SE trim, to $27,077 (£18,280) for the 1.4 with dual-clutch transmission and S-line trim.

For the moment, the performance model is the 1.4-liter TFSI unit, which achieves a maximum speed of 126 mph, accelerates from zero to 62 mph in 8.9 seconds, and delivers 44 mpg. The little 1.2-liter is designed for torque rather than outright power, and delivers equivalent figures of 112 mph, 11.7 seconds to 60 mph, and 46 mpg. The 104-hp turbodiesel hits 118 mph, gets to 60 mph in 10.5 seconds and nets a respectable 59 mpg.

2010 Audi A1 Gallery

The Drive

We opted for the middle Sport trim level, which is predicted to be the most popular seller. This has a slightly harder sports suspension, seats that offer some lateral support and leather trim for the steering wheel and shifter. Our car also had the Wunderbar (no, we're not making this up) upholstery option with lime-green inserts in questionable taste, and upgraded 17-inch wheels and tires.

Few of these details matter when you open up the long doors and feast your eyes on one of the tastiest cabins in the sector. It appears to be stolen from a different class of car altogether, and that's mainly because it is. The A8 has donated not just its premium levels of fit and finish, but also its state-of-the-art multimedia interface (MMI) for the electronics, navigation system and Bose stereo. Aside from the equipment, the A8's wit and charm have also undergone the miniaturization process. The aluminum trim, the knurled chrome heater switches and the beautiful symmetry of the MMI are a huge step up in this sector.

There's plenty of space for front-seat passengers, and the trunk is respectably large, but the rear seats are suitable only for children, and even then, not for long. The standard of the trim falls off in back as well, and the side panels are thin, easily marked and unpleasant to touch.

While the diesel is likely to be the most popular engine in the U.K., it's also the least endearing. The low-end torque is more than good enough to fire the 1.1-ton car up the road with alacrity, but it's also noisy and fills the cabin with a trembling vibration that's at odds with the aforementioned quality of the environment. Don't tell anyone, but it also feels less refined than the equivalent VW Polo model.

The best engine is the 1.4 TFSI gasoline unit, which makes the car feel brisk and strong, with respectable torque to avoid the need to row it along with the gear lever. The twin-clutch transmission option is a technological marvel, but after you've had fun climbing up and down the box a few times, the full-auto default option makes it just a heavy and expensive slush box.

As for the little 1.2-liter, it's a buzz bomb, with a rifle-bolt-accurate five-speed manual transmission. We liked it, but out of town its frenetic nature will be tiring.

The ride is reasonably comfortable, but the bigger potholes catch out the rear suspension, and the way washboard surfaces are transmitted into the cabin shows up the workaday chassis components. Surprisingly, the 17-inch wheels don't murder the ride quality as they do on the Mini Cooper, but 16 inches is a better bet in the city. The steering is accurate and firmly weighted but lacks feedback and the sporting feel of a Mini or Citroën DS3. The handling is equally disappointing. The A1 has none of the pent-up energy of its rivals, which monster up the road just begging to be thrown into the corners. The A1 simply does the job, but with none of the chassis character that allows you to steer the car with the throttle or the brakes. The brakes are strong, but again, the pedal lacks feedback.

The Bottom Line

Efficient rather than charismatic, the little A1 will be sold on its technology and its closeness to the rest of the four-ringed range. The first of those claims barely holds water, as the A1's ubiquitous chassis and pressed steel body are a long way from Audi's truly innovative A2 model, which in the 1990s combined an aluminum body with remarkable fuel economy and space-age looks. The second claim is uncomfortably true if you substitute Volkswagen for Audi; the A1's closeness to the VW Polo says far more about marketing expediency than it does high ideals or driving enjoyment. The Audi has a nice cabin and it's inoffensive to look at, but once the wheels are turning, frankly, you aren't missing much. And for now, neither is the U.S. market.

Will Chinese cars sell in U.S, this year?

Chinese automakers are finally making their move on the U.S. auto scene. Geely Automotive in March finalized a deal to buy Swedish automaker Volvo from Ford. And BYD, the fastest growing Chinese automaker, has opened an office in Los Angeles and hopes to deliver its first vehicles to California consumers by the end of 2010.

China is often held up as a kind of economic boogeyman to Americans. The country's cheap labor has decimated the U.S.
Hitag-2 key tool| Key code reader| bmw gt1| textile industry, and the fear among labor unions and Detroit is that it could do the same to autos. But it appears that it could be a long time before China has the kind of impact on American driveways that, say, the Japanese have had. Moreover, it's not a stretch to say that it could be decades before China has anything close to the same success in the U.S. that Western automakers have had in China already.

BYD is perhaps the most ambitious of the Chinese automakers, with proclamations from its leadership that it aspires to become the world's biggest automaker by 2025.|
Ford key copy vise| Ford Mazda keymaker|Gambit programmer Car key master II| BYD, which started out as a battery company, sold 449,000 vehicles last year in China, and began exports to South America, Africa and the Middle East. This December, the company plans to begin selling electric crossover vehicles through a small dealer group in California to establish its beachhead in the U.S.

What could hinder BYD's plans and those of other Chinese automakers? Analysts and competitors point to a lack of orientation about quality standards in the U.S., a deficit in engineering prowess and intense competition by the established brands.

Chinese automakers have long been criticized for copying, or knocking off, Western designs. But while the exteriors of the vehicles occasionally look similar to Chevys and BMWs,|

The latest indication came from the China Association for Quality, which said buyer complaints have been rising, not falling. Complaints about cars that have quality problems within six months of purchase increased nearly 60 percent in the first quarter of 2010. Complaints about safety issues and production defects rose 15 percent compared to the same period in 2009. That's a setback, according to J.D. Power and Associates, which had measured an improvement in quality from 2008 to 2009 in its Initial Quality Study.

Brilliance Automotive, which, like BYD, has displayed vehicles at the Detroit Auto Show as a precursor to selling in the U.S., is withdrawing from Europe after a poor reception and widespread reports of deficient quality. "One of the things that clearly holds back the Chinese so far is their apparent unwillingness to put Westerners who know these markets into key leadership positions," says Los Angeles marketing consultant Dennis Keene. "They don't seem to know what they don't know about the export markets they are going into."

Another possible culprit? Jim Federico, vehicle line engineer for Buick, which has been operating in China for a decade via a joint venture with Shanghai Automotive,

It could be that the Chinese would be much better off concentrating on their home market for now anyway. Last year, automakers sold more than 13 million
new vehicles, eclipsing the U.S. market. And through the first quarter of 2010, the industry was on track to sell more than 16 million, 25 percent more than the best estimates for the U.S.

GM has stepped up its focus on China for that reason. The automaker expects to sell more than 2 million vehicles, including over 1 million commercial vans and trucks, in 2010. GM is five years ahead of its planning to reach that milestone. It expects to sell 3 million annually by 2015, 10 years ahead of plan.

That growth at home is one of the reasons why Geely is tempering its export aspirations. Despite buying Volvo, the company says it plans to keep the brands and operations separate. "Selling to developed markets is at least a few years down the road," says Frank Zhao, the company's vice president for technology. There is a lot about meeting standards in those markets, he said, that Geely is going to learn from Volvo.

"That is a sensible approach," says Rebecca Lindland, director of automotive research at IHS Gobal Insight. "Companies like Mitsubishi, Suzuki, Subaru and others have been in the U.S. a lot longer and found growth and acceptance very hard to crack."

If actual Chinese brands are years off from making a major impact on the U.S., their presence is being felt nonetheless. The interior of the new and much lauded
2010 Buick LaCrosse was heavily designed by GM's Shanghai design center. Federico says the lines and curves of the dashboard and the attention to detail in the back seat came from GM's Chinese partners. "They have taught our people a lot about creating a whole environment for the driver and passengers, not just designing individual elements," Federico says. The impact of the Shanghai studio is felt on the Regal, Federico says, and a forthcoming smaller sedan based on the Buick Excelle in China.

The irony is that a Buick long pitched to U.S. consumers as a traditional "American" luxury may quickly become the best example of Chinese know-how in the U.S. auto industry.
